FUN-SCHOOLING

I've decided that this is what I want to call the schooling we have with our children. I first heard of this term only today at href="http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/CommunicationFUNdamentals/Carnival%2Bof%2BFUNschooling/">this website:
I didn't look much into it other than it seems to be a once per year carnival. I (ETA) "googled" it as I started writing this blog entry and others have also seemed to see the journey we call "school" as fun as well. Shouldn't it be though?

I want my children to enjoy school. It seems like we have so much fun learning! I don't deny my children workbooks or teaching them their abc's. I think that this is a privilege to teach my children these things in order that they can explore subjects they wish to learn on their own as soon as they can. However, I don't want them to learn subjects just for the sake of learning them. I find public school squelches the joy out of learning. I think it was my href="http://fimby.tougas.net/renee/creativity_part_2">My SIL's blog (can't believe I actually found it) that discussed subjects like math and it's lack of creativity in public school. It's a funny dig and DEFINITELY worth the watch. Not many people see math as fun or as a creative art-form. The video discusses how math is fun! Math is a game that one plays in the mind with angles and numbers and... well, the video describes it so well!

Unfortunately, public school "learning" is rarely thought of as fun. This just does NOT seem like the kind of school we do in our home. The learning curriculum found in the public school system just doesn't sound fun nor self-motivating. I don't want my kids to go to school as a goal to get somewhere "else" or as a means to an end.

Learning is fun! Let's keep it that way as our kids continue to learn through Funschooling!

More on this soon. :)

Yay for funschooling - I love

Yay for funschooling - I love that idea.

Wow, that was a great video!

Wow, that was a great video! I love the part about Jillian Lynne who played a part in the creation of Cats. How true! How many children are stifled these days.

Kids love spending time with their parents and they are incredibly curious - homeschooling is great because it meets both needs. I decided to homeschool after I tried a sample of a unit based study with K and the next day he ran up to me and said "what activities are we doing today" with such excitement. It just feels like great quality time with your kids, doesn't it?
