Who Am I?

Isn't this a question some of us ask ourselves? "Who are we"? I realized recently that this question is oh-so-loaded and just waiting to set us up for disappointment.

First of all, what does "who" mean? If we can't put a tangible definition on this "who" word than how can we possibly even answer this important question.

We've heard of "who we're not". We are not to be defined by "what" we do in our careers. Although we still hear that in our every day circles don't we..."Hi, my name is ____ and I am a doctor who works at the ______. We all know not to do this... don't we? But, maybe there's something TO this "what" we do that really DOES define "who" we are.

Maybe you are a caring person. That is an action word. Maybe you like to laugh a lot or party a lot... also action words. So, if "who" we are is defined by the actions we carry out, then I suppose I better get up off my butt. Lately I've been a bit of a sloth. It's winter here in Canada after all. Not uncommon to find at least a touch of Seasonal Affective Disorder in at least every other person you meet. So perhaps winter is not the time to ask this oh-so-important question. You know, come to think of it. I suppose people around us are better "judges" of who we are than we are of ourselves. This question of "who" we are probably changes from time to time. With new people we meet and new circumstances we encounter, perhaps noone really can answer this question accurately.

This probably goes back to the same issue surrounding judging others. If we really don't think that everyone has every facet of our being figured out, how possibly could we answer who anyone around us is, enough that we can judge why they did what they did when they did it.

So, before I get into this phase of "who am I" again. I think I'll remember that this question should just not be asked right now... not to me anyway.
