My son has a Citrus Intolerance

I have known for some time that I've had to avoid oranges, tomatoes, apples, and anything really acidic for my 3 year old, J. He is such a trooper though. I've found that pears are okay for him. We just came through apple season. So sad to watch J not eat apples with everyone. However, I think it looks more sad to me than it "feels" to him. All I need to say to him is, I'm sorry J, but, it will hurt your chin" and he says with enthusiasm, "Oh, it will hurt my chin? Okay!"

What a guy!

We've had to alter a lot of our recipes for him. It started out feeling impossible but, it's really quite simple... except that I LOVE tomato-based meals. I could eat tomatoes every day! Luckily, for his father, who doesn't like tomatoes half as much as I do, we aren't able to cater to this obsession of mine. I finally gave in though and did make some alternate forms of my tomato based recipes for J. Best of both worlds! Hehe

We have to go back to the allergy specialist in 6 months. All the hard work I put in paid off!! I didn't really need the specialist after all. He basically said, "it looks like he is sensitive to citrus", which is quite common apparently. It's not an allergy. He hopes to reintroduce it in 6 months and have J build up an immunity to it. His plan, if I understand correctly, is to introduce citrus again and despite any signs of this intolerance, to continue to offer it in hopes that he will outgrow it.

I'm not so sure about this approach yet. I want to look into it before saying yes or no. He bases this approach on a study with children who suffered with anaphylactic shock and asthma. They were presented this approach and a huge majority of them actually, in fact, did outgrow them within weeks to months! I don't know the details of the study. It seems a bit intrusive to me. On the other hand, if you think about the risks associated with anaphylactic shock and asthma, a controlled environment with the hopes of eliminating this risk, may actually be a worthwhile pursuit! Hmmm... I'll letcha know what I come up with.
